The client wanted this kitchen to be "funky". It became a combination of an antique Chinese cabinet, existing chairs and table and cabinets of two colors, which made it look really different. The floor is Hickory and the backsplash is glazed porcelain tile with glass accents in colors which pull everything together. The countertop is solid surfacing and all appliances are stainless steel.
This contemporary kitchen was installed in a mid-century modern home. Larger windows were put in to do justice to the spectacular view. The wall cabinets are natural maple, the appliances and pulls are all stainless steel. The counter tops are "Richlite" paper based solid surfacing product. The floor is cork tile. The track lighting is a monorail with various pendants of different lengths.
This kitchen remodel opened up the wall to the living room and a partial wall to the dining room. The cabinets were taken to the ceiling to recoup the lost space. The cabinet doors were lymed to keep the light maple from going too yellow. A skylight and some good task lighting were installed to flood the kitchen with light. The backsplash tile are handmade white tile, accented with hand painted tile which in turn match the rich juperana granite counter tops. The island top and the floor are natural maple. A bar-height counter top was installed on the open living room and dining room sides, very useful when entertaining guests.
The small space of this kitchen made it challenging to give it an open, spacey feel. 8'x8' is all we had to work with. However, we succeeded by placing both, the refrigerator and the freezer, under counter and by keeping the u-shaped countertop uncluttered. The cabinets are natural cherry, the countertop is soapstone tile. Since the window is facing north, the light coming into the kitchen is rather cool. This was offset by painting the walls brick red, which helped in making this efficient kitchen a warm and inviting room.
